WE MUST
HELP

" Red is the color of the blood which men must shed for their redemption and liberty; black is the color of the noble and distinguished race to which we belong; green is the color of the luxuriant vegetation of our motherland. "

excerpt from the Universal Negro Catechism of Marcus Garvey's UNIA (1921)

AFRICAN SOIL SPECIFICATIONS
African soil from the
Niger River Basin
Item #: 9901GRE

Green for the Land

The act of pouring libation to the Ancestors and Ancestresses begins and ends each Kwanzaa ceremony. Although libation may be poured any where in the world, on any soil, with no loss in efficacy, libation poured on soil imported from ancestral Africa bears a special spiritual appropriateness and solemnity. That the soil comes from the Niger River Basin makes it all the more ancestral and hallowed. This river basin was once home to an estimated 40% of all Africans enslaved in the Americas.1
